First Pediatric Dentist Appointment
At Oak Grove Dental Center, we recommend bringing your child in for their first dental appointment between the ages of two (2) and three (3) years old. Their first visit may simply be coming into the dental office to sit in the dentist chair and receive a special “prize” from the toy box. Don’t worry, if your child is not ready, they will not be forced to do anything as this first visit is an exploratory visit with a positive result for your child’s participation. We all enjoy being rewarded for trying something new. For most young children, that first and second visit to the dentist office is a big accomplishment, so let’s celebrate. Our priority is making sure that your little one’s first trip to the dentist is a positive one.
Children usually start getting their baby teeth during the first six (6) months of life. At or around age six (6) or seven (7), your child will start losing their first set of teeth. As this process happens, you will see the first set of teeth eventually replaced by a secondary set of teeth which will be your child’s permanent teeth. This is important information to know as proper dental care is critical during these stages of pediatric dental care. Without the proper dental hygiene attention, young children through teens could develop possible oral decay or diseases which could cause them a life of complications, aggravation and pain. The American Academy of Pediatrics, who are dedicated to the health of all children, shared that, “Today, early childhood dental caries—an infectious disease—is 5 times more common in children than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever” (www.healthychildren.org). At Oak Grove Dental Center, our caring dental team believes that education is the best way to prevent tooth decay. Teaching children and their parents how to take care of their teeth at an early age is key to maintaining a healthy smile for a lifetime.
