Dental Restorations

When you get a dental filling, it’s nice to think you’ll never have to worry about that tooth again. Sadly, even with consistent dental hygiene, there’s a risk that a filling will need upkeep or maintenance. In some cases, it’s entirely possible for the filling to fall out and need to be replaced. While dental fillings needing repair can be uncomfortable or painful, there are ways of catching them early enough to avoid significant discomfort. Patients at Oak Grove Dental Center who’ve noticed discomfort related to previous dental reconstruction know they can come to use to alleviate the discomfort and restore their smile.

Problems With Dental Restorations And When To Replace Them

While it’s easy to tell when a restoration has fallen out, it can be more challenging to determine when they’re getting close to needing to be replaced. The first signs can be entirely tactile.  Maybe you’ve noticed the filling is developing rough points or has lifted out of the gap in your tooth. Maybe you’ve begun to experience discomfort when drinking hot or cold beverages, or the tooth has begun to change colors. Regardless of what sign catches your attention, they’re telling you it’s time to get your dental restoration replaced.

Dental fillings take a few forms, the most common of which is the silver amalgam filling. However, more modern approaches to filling a cavity during dental restoration include composite bonding material. This material is made from a combination of a polymer and glass combination to create a toothlike appearance that is durable and easily shaped to fit dental cavities. Porcelain is also used in some forms of dental restoration and is preferred for its appearance and durability.  Fillings play an essential role in dental care, serving to restore the integrity of the tooth and and prevent further decay.

Warning signs that indicate that you may need a dental restoration include:

  • Pain when consuming hot or cold food or beverages
  • There are visible holes or cavities in your teeth
  • Discoloration in the tooth indicates a forming cavity
  • Dental trauma leading to broken, chipped, or cracked teeth

As you can see, the indicators that you need a filling are similar to those that indicate it needs to be replaced. Replacing a dental filling is a relatively straightforward experience. It begins with the removal of any remaining remnants of the previous filling. Once this is complete, the gap in the enamel is cleaned of any debris and developing decay in preparation for the replacement filling. The gap will be measured, and the filling will be manufactured and put in place.
